On January 30th eighty mission members from the Philippine Minnesotan Medical Association
(PMMA) will embark on yet another mission to the Philippines. This bi-annual trip headed by
Dr. Bernard Quebral has been in existence since 1998. However, this mission will be much
different than those of the past.

The 2014 PMMA Medical Mission will be held in Samar, one of the south-eastern islands
of the Philippines. Considered one of the poorest provinces of all the Philippines, Samar
continues to endure the forces of nature, tropical storms and most recently typhoon, Haiyan .
The already impoverished area and devastated island will be in great need of medical support
and services.

North Provincial Samar is where our missionaries will work for on February 1-8, 2014. It is
through the relationships with the Ong Family, local officials and the Catarman hospital
administration, that services will be available to help those in need. Approximately 5000-8000
patients will receive services during this week-long mission.  The mission group will
provide out-patient services, major and minor surgical procedures and dental services.

Over the past two years, the mission group, along with a local partner, Hope for the City,
a non-profit organization that resources corporate surplus, havs been making preparations
for this trip. It is through this partnership that PMMA has obtained medical equipment and
supplies to send to the Philippines. Two containers with over $1.2 M of supplies were recently
shipped in October. Much of this equipment has been donated by local healthcare facilities
around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. (Allina, Fairview, HCMC and Regions Hospital) The
containers sent will allow the mission group to supply the local hospital and surrounding
clinics with the much needed supplies and equipment.
The wake of Typhoon Haiyan has left more devastation and has intensified the need for
medical attention and services. Two additional containers will ship in the next few weeks
to provide food, clothing, hygiene products and blankets to help in aiding the typhoon victims.

Collecting supplies and equipment and providing medical services is only half of the
equation, it takes great financial resources to make it all happen.

Fundraising efforts are ongoing: Each mission member is committed to make a $500 donation
in addition to paying for their own travel arrangements. All members fundraise though friends
and family along with soliciting corporate contributions. The funds collected are needed to pay
for the shipment of the containers, medicines, medical tests, labs and travel expenses for the
patients and their families of those who obtain surgical care.

Our efforts are focused in raising additional funds to help support in aid from the typhoon.
By the time we arrive, infections and disease will be rampant. There will be more people in
need of medicine and our services. Food and shelter will be scarce. It will be over-whelming.
Our battle will be difficult and we will only be able to do so much.

If you can, please help us to help the people of Samar.
Your gift will truly make an impact in a life of someone in need.
